along the Tyrrhenian route
Giglio Island, set in the sea, may seem like an isolated place to retreat to contemplate thesunrise and sunset in a natural setting of rare beauty. However, this is only part of the truth.
The island has always been at the center of the Tyrrhenian sea route, one of the most important in the Mediterranean.
Indeed, human presence has been documented continuously since at least theMetal Age and permanently to the present day.
The exploitation of natural resources has always gone hand in hand with the crucial control role proper to maritime traffic. While this fact is most evident for theRoman age, with the port structures and wrecks, nevertheless both before and after the function of supporting navigation was the main motivation for thestrategic importance of the island.
That is why even in the Middle Ages and modern times all the major political players had an interest in conquering and controlling the island.
