From Gloriosa Square to the church
The route starts from the main square, former site of the church of St. Mary, and passes through thesoutheast entrance with its medieval alleys. Among the stone buildings you reach the square with the 12th-century, later Baroque church and the cistern, the only source ofwater outside the fortress.
The route begins on the glorious square that even only two centuries ago looked very different. In fact, the church dedicated to St. Mary was present here. The route continues with the present access to the castle from the southeast. This was originally an antiporta, that is, a reinforced gate to allow better defense. Upon entering you can see both the reinforced outer gate and the original one. From here there are several alleys that are the result of urban planning that aimed to repopulate the village.
The buildings are stacked on top of each other and founded on rock benches of which the cuts to implant the foundations can still be seen. The architecture is all in stone, giving the alleys and buildings an ancient look even when on closer examination they appear more recent than the original layout. The presence of many not restored buildings.
Through the maze of narrow streets you come to a square where the church and cistern are. These are two monuments built at different times. In fact, the church can be dated in its first layout to the 12th century and incorporates in its more recent Baroque version a tower that was instead part of a wall circuit that has now completely disappeared, but of which anecho remains in another tower still visible in 17th-century maps.
In contrast, the cistern is much more recent and is the village 's only source of water supply outside the fortress.
